A Cool Gig: Behind the Lens with Nikki Butler of Dignity for Divas for People Magazine!

Friends, I’m still buzzing! I recently had one of the most incredible opportunities of my photography career: I was asked to shoot photos for a People Magazine feature article! And not just any article – this one was about the inspiring Nikki Butler, the powerhouse behind the amazing nonprofit, Dignity for Divas. The piece, titled “How Sir Mix-a-Lot’s Former Backup Dancer Now Helps Other Women in Need ‘Rebuild Their Lives’ (Exclusive),” is a testament to Nikki’s strength, resilience, and unwavering dedication to helping vulnerable women in our community.

Getting the call to be a part of this project was surreal. I’ve long admired Nikki and the impactful work of Dignity for Divas right here in the Pacific Northwest. For those unfamiliar, Dignity for Divas is dedicated to helping women rebuild their lives by providing housing assistance, self-care support, and a wealth of resources at their Diva Dream Academy. As the article beautifully highlights, Nikki’s own journey fueled this mission.

The People article delves into Nikki’s courageous move to Seattle in 2008, seeking freedom from an abusive relationship with little more than determination and her trusty Madonna CD. As the article states:

“You never decide, ‘Hey, I’m going to be homeless,’ ” she tells PEOPLE now. “And the problem is you don’t plan. You find a window of freedom and you dive through.”

Nikki’s early struggles, working multiple jobs to secure a home after leaving her dogs behind in Atlanta, ignited a fire in her to ensure other women wouldn’t face the same daunting obstacles. This drive led to the birth of Dignity for Divas in August 2012.

What struck me most while photographing Nikki was her infectious energy and genuine warmth. She embodies the very essence of the “diva” her organization champions – a woman who is strong, resilient, and deserving of respect. The article emphasizes this beautifully:

Every woman that works with Dignity for Divas is referred to as a “diva,” a title they’re proud to claim and a collective identity that helps remind them that they aren’t alone. Gane-Butler herself often sports an “I Am a Diva” T-shirt. She also says the other half of her organization’s name is just as important: dignity.

Capturing the spirit of Dignity for Divas through my lens was an honor. Witnessing the supportive environment at the Diva Dream Academy, a space buzzing with workshops, counseling sessions, and vocational training, was truly inspiring. I saw firsthand how Nikki and her team are empowering women to regain their footing and build brighter futures.

One detail from the article that particularly resonated with me was the emphasis on providing high-quality goods in their toiletry and supply kits:

“It’s not just about giving someone soap,” Gane-Butler explains. “It’s about the good soap. It’s of the quality that maybe just tied her back into herself a little bit … it’s that dignity to make someone start to see themselves again.”

It’s these thoughtful touches that speak volumes about Nikki’s approach and the profound impact of Dignity for Divas. The article also touches upon the local and national recognition the organization has received, which comes as no surprise to those who know Nikki and her tireless work. Even Sir Mix-a-Lot, a longtime friend, isn’t surprised by her success!

Being able to contribute to sharing Nikki’s powerful story and the incredible work of Dignity for Divas with the readers of People Magazine is an experience I will cherish. It’s a reminder of the power of one person’s vision and the profound difference they can make in the lives of so many.

I encourage you all to read the full article on the People website and learn more about Dignity for Divas. If you’re looking for ways to support their vital mission right here in our community, please visit their website.

Thank you, Nikki, for allowing me to be a small part of your incredible journey. It was an absolute privilege.
